There has to be a reason why more and more catamarans are to be seen at the most popular sailing destinations. So, let’s see in detail why catamarans have become one of the favorite boats to be chartered.
Having two hulls joined by a single frame, all the areas are balanced in these two spaces, meaning more space, superior stability, and superb comfort. All the common areas and the cabins are bigger; meaning you can easily walk on the deck, chill in a broad cockpit with the other passengers or lounge in the living room, and in the kitchen. But it doesn’t end here! Most catamarans have a 360-degree view from the cockpit to the saloon, meaning that the sitting areas tend to have expansive panoramic views and exceptional natural ventilation and brightness.
Catamarans are also equipped with netting on which you can stretch out and relax while having a drink and sunbathing! What’s more, the cabins are more spacious, more like real bedrooms, and more distant from one another and can be in completely separate hulls, which is quite useful when you feel like having more privacy. That’s why catamarans are suitable for large groups of friends, or families, and of great value when there are kids on board. There’s space for a lot of people and a lot of stuff, thus the size is one of the major reasons why vacationers chartering a boat, love catamarans.
Another big reason for their popularity is their stability. Cats are steadier and don’t heel over too much on the waves, so there's less chance of them making you dizzy. Catamarans also don’t need too much water underneath them and can therefore sail in shallow waters and allow you to find sheltered bays for relaxing under the sun or taking a nap.
Although catamarans might have only gained popularity in the last two decades, they have long been in use. Since the early 5th century BC, catamarans (from the Tamil world Kuttamaram - kattu meaning "to tie" and maram "wood tree”) were used by the paravas, a fishing community in the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, in India, to invade Southeast Asian regions. However, other earlier examples of catamaran-type boats date back to 1500 BC in Polynesia: outrigger canoes consisting of two canoes bound together with a wooden frame that seafaring Polynesians used to travel to distant Pacific islands.
Before the 19th century, catamarans were almost unknown in western countries until the English adventurer and buccaneer William Dampier found himself amongst that ancient fishing community, and became the first to write about this kind of boat.
Catamarans have come a long way since then and are now equipped with the latest technology and designed with remarkable living spaces and a superb level of comfort and performance. They are therefore rightly gaining in popularity for many reasons, but not without meeting a certain skepticism from the majority of experienced sailors.
In the ’80s, catamarans were almost an exception, whereas today they are the favorite craft of many sailing vacationers.
What makes the catamaran so popular today is its distinctive frame, although that is also what made it a subject of criticism in the past. What distinguishes catamarans from sailboats and other types of boats is precisely its structure, multi-hulled with two parallel hulls of equal size, unlike the sailboat which is single hulled. Like the sailboat, it is equipped with sails, but there are also powered catamarans that function with an engine.
However, they have met a certain degree of skepticism from Western sailors accustomed to more 'traditional' monohull designs, since catamarans were based on sailing concepts completely strange to them, but they have improved performance and handling so much in recent years that they have succeeded in overcoming the initial reluctance that surrounded them.
As we have seen above, the main reasons for their rapidly growing reputation are one, their stability, which is particularly significant for those prone to seasickness, and two, the vast space that they offer. Another sometimes overlooked benefit of sailing a catamaran is that thanks to its structure, it also enables easy cruising in shallow waters.
Catamarans are suitable for everyone! Rent one and see for yourself!
